Is SaaS Really Heading Toward the End?
For some time now, the tech industry has repeated provocative claims like “SaaS is dead.” Alongside them came dramatic phrases like “SaaS Armageddon” and “SaaSpocalypse,” all pointing to the same idea: that AI may fundamentally reshape software as we know it.

Before AI, software could already store information, classify it, search it, and process it according to rules. Automation existed long before generative AI. But most of that automation was limited to executing predefined procedures and repetitive tasks faster, more consistently, and at greater scale.

But the core assumption remained unchanged: software accelerated execution, while humans remained the ones defining intent, interpreting reality, and deciding what should happen next.

It starts to absorb parts of the work that were previously tied to human reasoning — understanding context, interpreting meaning, identifying relevance, suggesting priorities, and increasingly shaping what action should follow.

The Deeper Shift Is the Redefinition of Responsibility
Even in an AI-driven environment, the underlying problems do not disappear. Payroll still has to be calculated. Access still has to be controlled. Policies still have to be enforced. Records still have to be preserved. Decisions still have to be carried through operational systems.
What changes is the method of solving those problems, and the operating model behind that method. As AI becomes involved in interpretation, recommendation, and execution, the human is no longer always the direct operator of every step. The operating subject shifts. The mechanism shifts. And once that happens, responsibility must be redefined as well.
In traditional software, responsibility was easier to map because humans directly initiated and executed actions through visible workflows. In an agent-driven model, that becomes more complex. If an agent reads context, selects a tool, performs an action, and produces an outcome, the key questions are no longer only whether the task was completed.
They become: under what authority did it act, on what basis did it decide, what constraints governed it, how can its behavior be reviewed, and who remains accountable for the result?
This is why the rise of AI does not reduce the importance of trust, governance, and accountability. It raises it. And it raises the importance of transparency and verifiability with it.
Trust May Become Scarcer Than Intelligence
The ability to generate language, recommendations, and even operational suggestions is becoming increasingly accessible. In that sense, intelligence is becoming more abundant.
What may prove far harder to commoditize is the infrastructure needed to handle sensitive data, critical rules, real execution rights, and accountability in a reliable way.
The stronger moat of the AI era may not be raw data alone. It may lie in the combination of governed data, codified domain knowledge, execution rights, and auditability. Especially in environments where agents move across multiple systems, what matters is not only what is possible, but what is permitted, what is controlled, and what can later be verified.
What New AI-Native Software Should Actually Mean
In this context, AI-native software should not mean software with AI added on top. It should mean software built for a world in which interaction, judgment support, and execution are increasingly delegated — and therefore must be governed, controlled, and made accountable by design.
That is a very different definition from simply embedding a chatbot into an existing workflow or adding AI to a conventional application stack.
If software is to survive and matter in the agent era, it must do more than sound intelligent. It must provide a trustworthy operational foundation for intelligence to act within.
Why HR and Payroll Are Different
This is exactly why HR and payroll need to be understood differently from many other categories of software. In many domains, “useful enough” can already create value. But HR and payroll rarely work that way.
In this domain, an elegant response matters less than an accurate amount. Fast automation matters less than accountable execution. A plausible interpretation matters less than a reproducible result. Employee data, compensation, tax treatment, statutory deductions, access permissions, and regulatory obligations all require a high degree of consistency, control, and verifiability.

So when people say SaaS is ending, they are only partly right. What may be ending is not software itself, but part of the old model in which humans manually navigated interfaces and directly invoked functions. What becomes more important instead is software that can ensure trust, responsibility, and governance in environments where judgment and execution are increasingly delegated.
The software that survives in the AI era may not be the software with the most screens or the most features. It may be the software that provides stronger control, clearer accountability, and more reliable execution — even if it becomes less visible as an interface.
